History of the Society

On October 29, 1998, the Board of Governors of the Insurance Institute had the foresight to create a professional community representing the graduates of the the Insurance Institute’s Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designations. A national teleconference was conducted at 15 sites across the country involving more than 300 graduates who became the first members of the newly formed CIP Society. Now the Society is a strong, vital and valued part of the Insurance Institute and the property and casualty insurance industry, with more than 15,000 members.

To commemorate its 10^th anniversary of advancing the education, experience, ethics and excellence of its members, the Society launched a year of celebration from October 2008 to October 2009. Anniversary celebrations including the following 10 anniversary activities:

1. A Special Board of Governors Anniversary Luncheon was held on October 25^th, 2008 to recognize the anniversary of the board decision to form the CIP Society.
2. All members were sent a 10^th Anniversary Commemorative Gift in November 2008. We hope you have used and enjoyed the Leadership Notebooks send to each member. We have been pleased to see them in use by many members.
3. The 10^th anniversary was recognized at Institute convocations across the country – November 2008 to March 2009.
4. The CIP Society hosted a National Leadership Webinar featuring Roger Martin, Dean of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Business on February 25, 2009 – which offered a very insightful presentation on the unique characteristics, perspectives and integrative thinking of leaders.
5. The CIP Society National Leadership Awards were launched and nominations were accepted March 1 to June 1, 2009 – we have been quite proud of the development and introduction of this new awards program as the only national recognition of leaders in the property & casualty (P&C) insurance industry.
6. A special gathering was held on April 23, 2009 with past and present chairs and members in attendance to reminisce about the 10 years of growth of the Society – as the drivers behind the membership benefits and services offered from conception, we thought it fitting to give recognition to the stewards of the Society’s growth and evolution.
7. A series of promotional ads have been placed in industry trade publications throughout the year to acknowledge the anniversary and promote the Leadership Awards program.
8. The Symposium hosted by the CIP Society Ontario on April 29, 2009 commemorated the 10^th anniversary with a special presentation and prize draw.
9. Many local Institutes and Chapters hosted a PROedge seminar and anniversary celebration in the Spring or Fall of 2009 for CIP Society members locally. As well, many CIP Society golf tournaments took the opportunity to celebrate the 10^th anniversary.

The first CIP Society National Leadership Award winners will be announced this Fall and presented with their one-of-a-kind sculpture at the appropriate Institute convocation between November 2009 and March 2010. Promotional ads in the industry trade publications will highlight the winners in the October editions.
